Police remained tight lipped over an investigation into a leak to Isle of Man Newspapers by Port St Mary Commissioners.
The Isle of Man Examiner reported how extraordinary general meetings had been held at the town hall to discuss the position of the clerk, who has been on sick leave since early January. The local authority asked police to investigate how the story was leaked to the press.
Isle of Man Newspapers was contacted by Constable Stephen Gorry at Castletown police station, who said he is looking into the events ’up to and including that press article and how that information has entered the public domain’.
Our journalist informed him that we do not reveal the sources of our stories.
Chief Constable Gary Roberts told the Independent: ’A complaint has been received from the board, which indicates that an offence under the Local Government Act may have been committed.
’The legislation has a clause preventing improper disclosure of information without the permission of the local authority.’Commissioners were invited to be interviewed - on a voluntary basis - by police recently.
Constable Gorry said: ’The investigation is ongoing and because of that we will not discuss it.’
When asked how long he thinks it will take, he said: ’It will take as long as it takes.’
