The Chief Minister has congratulated Robert Buckland on his appointment as new Justice Secretary in Boris Johnson’s cabinet.
It’s a role which includes the responsibility for relations between the UK and the Crown Dependencies.
Previous postholders David Gauke and David Lidington both quit the government ahead of Johnson securing the keys to No.10 Downing Street.
Following Mr Buckland’s appointment, Chief Minister Howard Quayle tweeted: ’Congratulations on your appointment as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. I very much look forward to continuing the strong working relationship between @MoJGovUK and @IOMGovernment.’
Mr Buckland QC has been the Tory MP for Swindon South since 2010.
A supporter of the UK’s membership of the EU during the 2016 referendum, he served as Solicitor General for England and Wales from 2014 to 2019 and was then Minister of State for Prisons for less than three months before his latest appointment.
Previous justice secretary David Gauke had indicated he could not serve in a Johnson administration and would resign before he was sacked.
He warned a no-deal Brexit would be a disaster for the economy and would risk the break-up of the UK.
Mr Lidington, who was justice secretary for just seven months until January 2018 when he became Cabinet Office Minister and de facto PM under Theresa May, tweeted: ’I’ve decided that after 20 years on the front bench it’s the right moment to move on.’
In a tweet, Mr Quayle wished Mr Lidington all the best for the future.
The Aylesbury MP replied: ’Thank you Howard. I’ve always enjoyed working with you and have fond memories of my visit to @IOMGovernment in 2017.’
