’Daniel’s Law’ - bringing in an opt-out system of organ donation - was approved by the House of Keys this week.

The Human Tissue and Organ Donation Bill was granted a third reading by MHKs on Tuesday. It grants a ’soft opt-out’, under which everyone over 18 is considered to have opted into an organ donation scheme, unless they opt out.

Martyn Perkins (Garff), who has guided the Bill through the Keys, said: ’I have been motivated to bring this Bill before this House as there are a number of people on the island who have received kidney, heart, lung, cornea and other organ transplants, which have completely changed their lives.

’The main purpose of this bill is to ensure that more organs become available for transplantation, both in the UK and on the Isle of Man.’

A potential donor’s family would still be consulted.

Mr Perkins said the Bill complemented the other major pieces of social legislation brought in since 2016 ’and really does change people’s lives for the better’.

He said he had heard ’many humbling stories’ from donor relatives as well as recipients.

The Bill will be known unofficially as ’Daniel’s Law’ in memory of Daniel Boyde - who died in a car crash at the age of just 15 - and to recognise the work of his mum Diane Taylor, who has campaigned on organ donation and worked with others to create a an organ donation memorial garden at Noble’s Hospital.

Mr Perkins said she had worked ’tirelessly to keep organ donation in the Isle of Man in the public domain’. He said it also recognised the memory of loved ones who had made donations possible.

The Bill will move onto consideration by the Legislative Council before it can become law.

A remembrance service for organ donors and recipients takes place on Saturday.

It will give the families of donors and recipients a chance to pay their tributes together. It has been organised by Organ Donation Isle of Man, Transplant Isle of Man and the Organ Donation Committee and takes place at St George’s Church, Douglas, from 3pm on December 5.

Family members will be able to light a candle for a loved one.
