Badly marked disabled parking bays are something the government should be doing more about, Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer has admitted.
In Tynwald on Tuesday, Mr Harmer told Lawrie Hooper (LibVannin, Ramsey) that the Department of Infrastructure and police had the powers to enforce rules and the government was also keen to see local authorities take on additional responsibilities.
That was welcomed by Mr Hooper’s Ramsey colleague Dr Alex Allinson, who said those who genuinely needed the disabled parking bays were angered when they saw the system being abused.
But he added that it was the DoI’s responsibility to ensure the bays were marked clearly.
’Unfortunately, too often the actual markings are worn out so it puts the police in a difficult position to actually enforce these rules,’ said Dr Allinson.
The Minister agreed.
’You have hit on a raw nerve of mine,’ said Mr Harmer. ’I am very passionate about the need for clear marking and clear lining - it is something I think we can schedule better.’
