New HGV regulations should bring in an extra £30,000 says the Minister for Infrastructure.

Ray Harmer was responding to a written question from Lawrie Hooper (Liberal Vannin, Ramsey).

Mr Hooper asked: ’What increase in receipts is expected in the first year after the introduction of the new HGV regulations?’

The new rules, introduced at the start of this year, require haulage firms to carry out daily checks of their vehicles and Manx based HGV operators have to register with the RTLC.

Mr Harmer said: ’In the first year revenue is anticipated to increase by approximately £30,000. The income generated is used to fund the activities of the RTLC, including the enforcement of the new regulations.’

In a further response, Mr Harmer said the DoI is not responsible for enforcement of the rules, that is the responsibility of the police and the RTLC.

When the new rules were announced, the RTLC said it would make the island’s roads ’safer’.

Haulage firms dismissed this and told Isle of Man Newspapers in 2018 that when they asked the RTLC for evidence the new rules were needed it was ’unable to provide it’.
