Vacancies in local authorities have given a political party the chance to establish itself.

The Isle of Man Green Party has two members who have confirmed their candidacies for vacant seats on Douglas Borough Council and Ramsey Commissioners.

Green Party chairman Andrew Bentley will stand as a candidate in Derby Ward, Douglas.

If any other person hands in their nomination papers by 5pm tonight (Friday, July 13), Mr Bentley will have the chance to offer his ideas to the Derby ward electorate.

If that happens, the by-election will be held on Thursday, August 9.

Mr Bentley said: ’My hope is to make a positive contribution to the regeneration of the nation’s capital for the benefit of the people of Derby Ward, Douglas and the Isle of Man.’

Also representing the party is Daniel Webb, who is standing in Ramsey’s south ward by-election.

That by-election is on Thursday, July 19.

Mr Webb said: ’I’m excited to have the opportunity to represent the Isle of Man Green Party in a by-election in my childhood town.

’If the people of Ramsey decide to elect me I will look to safeguard their interests and the interests of the beautiful environment we live in.’

The party will host a meeting in the Mitre pub in Ramsey on Tuesday, July 17, from 6pm.
