A Laxey man has announced he is seeking to fill the vacant seat on Garff Commissioners.

The position became available when Stewart Clague resigned on November 1.

A previous attempt to fill the seat failed after no one came forward.

Andy Cronin, who lives at Ard Reayrt with his wife Elena and their baby, Scarlett, said he feels ’Lonan has been forgotten and needs representation’.

He added: ’I am a new father and I am lucky enough to be living in Laxey where there are local amenities, play areas, doctors, pubs and shops.

’Those living in Lonan aren’t anywhere near as lucky, so it’s important that focus is given to the areas outside the main town which require attention.

’I also think there should be a refresh in members from time to time, and I believe that I am at a point where I can contribute to the board.

’So, don’t expect me to still be sitting here as a commissioner in 20 years time completely stagnated, because I won’t be.’

Andy explained that he was not on the electorial register until January 1 this year, so had been unable to seek nominations before now. He hopes others will come forward, rather than someone being ’elected’ by default.

He said: ’Since there wasn’t a single person who put themselves forward for nomination, this has gone in my favour, because I now have the opportunity to run against other good candidates and if successful be elected rather than walk in.’

One of the biggest issues facing Garff recently is plans for a new sea wall which Andy explained he feels like he is in the majority in opposing the wall.

He added: ’I’ve already challenged the unelected member for Lonan who is the current chairman to stand down and run as a candidate, and on that note good luck to everyone who decides to run for the seat, they have my full support.’
