A proposed merger between two local authorities has led to accusations of a lack of respect.

It was announced this week that Braddan and Santon commissioners are to join forces to create one authority.

However, this has led to Marown Commissioners saying they are ’disappointed that Santon Commissioners did not have the courtesy or respect to inform us of this development’.

A statement added: ’In August 2019 we had approached Santon, as well as western authorities Patrick and German, about forming a Middle Parish and had held constructive talks with Santon who were the only parish who expressed an interest.

’Having read our minutes discussing a Middle Parish formation, we were approached in April/May 2020 by a member of Braddan Commissioners with a view to them joining our discussions.

’This was not an option for us, as it is our view that Braddan are an eastern authority and would not bring sufficient benefit to a Marown/Santon merger as they were not of a similar residential and commercial outfit as us.’

The proposed merger between Braddan and Santon would, if all goes timely, be brought into effect in time for the local elections in April 2021.

Braddan Chairman Andrew Jessopp says the move ’makes sense’.

The two local authorities at present have a membership of 10 (five in each), but a merger will see that reduced to six (three from each).

Marown Commissioners added: ’We would like to confirm and reassure Marown Parishioners that we shall not be joining forces with Braddan or Santon, either individually or together, to form a Middle Parish.’
