All local authorities in the island have now confirmed their rates from April 1, with all but two having upped the cost to households.

The final three to confirm their charges were Patrick, Santon and German commissioners.

Rates in the parishes of Patrick and Santon will increase.

Patrick ratepayers are facing a 6.7% rise, up from 165 to 176 pence, while Santon rates have gone up by 4 pence to 129 pence.

German Commissioners have chosen to hold the parish rate at 91 pence in the pound, but upped the refuse rate by a penny, to 62 pence in the pound.

The greatest change will be felt by ratepayers in Bride, who face a 11 per cent hike, but still pay the lowest rates in the island.

Those who live in the capital will still pay the most, with Douglas setting the figure at 444 pence in the pound.

Inflation and the rising cost of waste collection and disposal were common reasons each authority pointed to when announcing a rise.

A 1.9% increase in gate fees at the Energy From Waste Plant, and a government pay award of 2.75%, were also blamed.

Another factor in the wave of increases was the cost of running the island’s four civic amenity sites, which are managed by shared committees.
