Peel Commissioners have confirmed that the annual refuse charge to each home will rise by £10 from April.

Residents will not see an increase in the town rate, which was again frozen at 257p in the pound, for the fourth year in a row.

However, at the rates setting meeting, commissionersd agreed to increase the refuse charge by £10 per household to cover the increase in costs at the western amenity site and the energy from waste plant (incinerator).

The only local authority the buck the trend this year of increases is Rushen which, due to its merger with Arbory under chief executive Phil Gawne, has seen a slight decrease.

The decrease to Rushen residents has been mediated by the Arbory residents seeing a slight increase, done to ensure the new join authority will have the same rate to smooth the merger.

The largest percentage increase unveiled so far has been in Marown where the commissioners have announced a 9.33% increase from £1.50 in the pound to £1.64 in the pound. However, the local authority does still have one of the lowest rates in the island.

Douglas Council, the island’s largest local authority, announced an 11p (2.5%) in the pound increase. It means the rate will go up to 444p in the pound from April, up from 433p.

Ramsey has seen an increase of 3%. The new rate will represent an increase of about 28p per week for a typical three-bedroom property within the town.

Onchan residents were greeted by the news of an increase of 5p, up to 323p in the pound, equivalent to a 1.57% increase.

Port Erin confirmed a 3p in the pound rise. Residents of the village have seen their rates set at 310p, an increase of less than 1% from the current rate of 307p.

Ballaugh Parish Commissioners announced the parish rate at 120p in the pound, which represents a 5p increase on the previous year.
