Unemployment rose sharply during lockdown last month.

The number registered out of work in March increased to 938, up 116 from February.

This was 88 higher than the same month last year.

The unemployment rate - the proportion of the economically active population registered unemployed - was 2.2%, an increase of 0.3% on February.

A total of 465 job vacancies were notified to the Job centre in March, a decrease of 187 compared to the previous month. At the end of the month, 307 remained. Of these, 197 were full time positions and 110 part time.

International Labour Organisation estimates, which include those out of work but not registered unemployed, put the jobless figure for March at 1,683, up from 1,417 in February, equating to an unemployment rate of 3.9%.

Sectors with the highest number of unemployed include construction, retail and catering.
