Lawyer Peter Willers has announced his intention to stand for Onchan in next month’s general election.

He will be standing as a Liberal Vannin MHK candidate.

He is a former UK barrister and has worked in legal, commercial and property business in the island and England.

Mr Willers, who moved to the island in 1986, says he is standing ’on the premise of freedom and justice and fairness for all’.

He believes that the government and Civil Service are ’currently not fit for purpose’.

Mr Willers, of Baldrine, said: ’The government have a great sales line - "Freedom to Flourish" - but it does not exist in practice.

’It must be the job of the next government to make that "Freedom" a reality and, with the Onchan voters’ help, I intend to make that happen.’

Onchan was the constituency that was once represented by Peter Karran, the first leader of the Liberal Vannin party. The constituency has had two more Lib Van members since - Zac Hall and Julie Edgey - but both left the party while in office.

Ms Edge is defending her seat in September. So Rob Callister. Their rivals are James Cherr and Michael Leather.

Meanwhile, Simon Mann is to stand for Ramsey in the upcoming general election.

In standing for this constituency he wishes for Ramsey locals to ’say no’ to the current Marina proposal.

He also asked that those in the town ’say yes to improved all island healthcare, more GPs and a new modern medical centre’ for the town.

In a statement, Mr Mann said: ’The island has suffered five years of decline under the current administration and the time has now come for change.

’I seek the support of the people of Ramsey to be a strong voice in delivering that change.’

Ian-James Clanton has withdrawn his candidacy from the election.

He was standing for the constituency of Arbory, Castletown and Malew.

The independent candidate posted thanked his supporters on social media and said: ’It is with great sadness that I must announce the postponement of my candidacy for MHK in this year’s general election.’

Known as ’HM Sole’, he had planned to run for a second time, having contested the Douglas South by-election last year.

Nominations closed for candidates to declare their intention to stand for the general election yesterday (Wednesday).
