Jurby beach was listed as one of six of the best island beaches in the British Isles by the Sunday Times.
It was said to be ’Best for Wreckers’ due to a fishing vessel that ran aground there in 1931. The hideaway beach was voted one of 40 best beaches in all of Britain by the UK newspaper.
We asked members of the public what their favourite beach is in the Isle of Man.
’Laxey,’ said Daisy Lee, 27. ’There are not too many people there and it’s only five to 10 minutes drive from Onchan. I go probably once a month there and just relax.’
Originally from China, she believes the beaches here are ’much cleaner’, but the water is far too cold for swimming.
Ben Squires, 11, from Douglas, named Peel beach as his all-time favourite sandy location.
With an ice cream in hand, he said: ’I think the sand there is softer than any other beach and I like that you have the sight of Peel Castle and a volleyball net.
’I’ve had quite a lot of summers there. We try to go in the sea only if it’s not too cold. The last time I went there was on a school trip and we had a full team playing volleyball and it was really fun.’
Douglas beach is a stable favourite for North Wales visitor Brian McWhirter.
’We went there yesterday (Wednesday, August 7) and we’re going back if the weather stays the same,’ the 54-year-old said while looking up at the blue sky.
’It’s not too cold,’ he said and showed a photo of him and his family out swimming in the bay.
’Especially when you compare it to the beaches we’re used to,’ he continued.
His daughter Chloe, 22, said: ’We’ve been to most places - we’ve been coming over since we were little. My dad used to go over with my grandma. When she passed away he kept on coming.
’It’s nice to come over because we have nice memories here.’
She added that the beaches at home ’aren’t as nice’, but it was ’sad’ to see fewer and fewer people going to Douglas beach.
’The amusements have all closed down, which is quite sad,’ she said.
Christian Clague, who has Douglas beach as his front garden, named Port Erin as his favourite Isle of Man beach.
’It’s the view firstly, the calmness and there’s stuff going on like having the opportunity to go paddleboarding,’ the 44-year-old said.
He has been on a paddleboarding venture himself. ’It was a good day out,’ he said.
’There’s nothing like that being offered in Douglas. Douglas beach is rough around the edges compared to the postcard scenes that you used to see. It’s quite sad really.’
He added that Garwick beach in Baldrine is ’beautiful’. ’I’ve never been to Jurby, but need to check that out,’ he said.
Madina Sharpe, 53, from Douglas, also voted Port Erin as her favourite beach.
’It’s child-friendly. My kids are now all adults. When they were youngsters we used to go there when the sun was shining.’
She added that the Manx public should be proud of their beaches. ’Especially when shop owners have made an effort to encourage tourism and people are cleaning the beaches,’ she said.
