A three-day strike carried out by postal workers is going ahead today (Thursday).

This follows discussions between the members of the Communication Workers’ Union and the Isle of Man Post Office, which have failed to reach mutual agreement on the proposed pension and payment changes.

Industrial action began at 5.30am today, which happens to be the Post Office’s busiest day of the year because it is Valentine’s Day.

The strike is scheduled to continue until February 16.

There are potentially more than 200 experienced members of staff out on strike. The Post Office advised customers that an island-wide doorstep delivery of standard post would not be possible - including Valentine’s Day cards. However, premium services will be prioritised.

The Post Office will try to deliver and collect as much other mail as possible, it said, but this depends on how many people attend for work on the strike days.

Around 500 bouquets of flowers are delivered by the service on Valentine’s Day, but luckily for romantics these will not be affected.

Postal workers had first unanimously voted for industrial action last year, with a strike taking place from December 13 to 14.
