W E Teares of Ramsey once again requested all the champions from this year’s Christmas prime stock show.
Kirree Kermode, procurement officer at Isle of Man Meats, explained the provenance of the winners.
She said: ’The beef champion and reserve came from the Quirk family from Corvalley Farm on Peel coast road extending up to Cronk y Voddy, 1000ft above sea level.
’The 420 acre farm is home to 120 cows, mainly Limousin x Saler cows using Limousin-blue stock sires, along with 320 Suffolk cross mule ewes who are crossed with Texel rams.
’Trevor believes using the correct genetics, alongside a well balanced finishing diet, delivers a consistent beef animal for Isle of Man all the year round.
’The champion lambs came from the Rothwell family, Foxdale winning the prime lamb section for the 3rd year in succession.
’They turned out a fantastic pair of Beltex lambs, well muscled with a lovely even cover of fat at perfect weight.
’Sarah Kewley, also no stranger to huge success at this annual event, scooped reserve champion at both shows this year with a pair of homebred lambs.
’Shaun Dean took the top three honours in the pork section delivering an exceptional champion and reserve yet again this year.’
W E Teare’s master butcher, Mark Matthews, said: ’The beef has already been sold and has been put away for maturing to perfection for Christmas Day. As soon as I announce the arrival of the pork and lamb, that’s gone in no time too.
’The quality is outstanding this year, with beautiful marbling and presentation. It’s a credit to the hard work of the Manx farmers.’
