Hstorian Professor Ronald Hutton is to speak at the Manx Museum on the subject of Queen Elizabeth I.

Elizabeth I was Queen of England from November 1558 until her death in March 1603.

She took control of the Isle of Man in 1594.

In this lecture, Professor Hutton will discuss how the Isle of Man came under Elizabeth’s direct rule.

Professor Hutton said: ’Queen Elizabeth I is undisputedly the best-remembered of English queens, having featured in film, television series and novels more than any other.

’This talk is designed to answer the question of why that is, and to try to understand the human being inside the historical legend.’

Professor Hutton, whose face will be familiar to many because of numerous appearances on television programmes, has visited the Isle of Man for more than a decade and is a leading authority on the history of the British Isles in the 16th and 17th centuries.

He is professor of history at the University of Bristol.

The lecture will take place on Friday, January 4.
