There were 161 responses to canvassing on traffic calming in Port St Mary conducted by the local authority.

Some 67% were in support of traffic calming; 25% were not and 8% were unsure.

In total, 51% thought Bay View Road woud benefit followed by the High Street (39%), Beach Road (37%), Park Road (34%) and Station Road (32%).

Favoured methods of traffic calming were a 20mph speed limit (85%), speed awareness cameras (60%) followed by home zones (44%).

Just 25% supported white lines and there was very little support for speed humps (18%), traffic islands and road narrowing (10%).

Separate canvassing of speed reduction measures on Beach  Road showed that 62% of respondents were in favour, 35% were not.

Just half supported warning signage or mproved speed signs (46 %), however 73% did not want white lines or cameras and 81% opposed a traffic island.

The authority will forward their findings to the Department of Infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the authority is requesting a meeting with DoI to discuss ’current issues’ including concerns about a landslip. Commissioners’ chairman Michelle Haywood wrote:’We have serious concerns due to movement in the bank under the remembrance garden and the road leading to Gansey Point.

’We would llike to see some preventative maintenance put in place before a serious issue, for example a land slide, occurs.’
