Children at Laxey Primary School raised nearly £900 towards the Worldwide Fund for Nature after learning about the impact on Australian wildlife caused by bushfires.

The Laxey School Eco-Buddies, which is a body of students that meet every Wednesday, decided to run a bake sale in aid of the wildlife charity to help the situation in Australia.

Holding an assembly to tell their peers about their fundraiser, the group gathered ideas on what they could do. It resulted in Year 3 students (ages seven and eight) creating letters to send to parents and publicising the event on Facebook.

Members of the community backed the effort by bringing in baked delights and donating money towards the cause.

The event also attracted the attention of Garff Commissioners and Beach Buddies founder Bill Dale.

Six tables in the sports hall were filled with cakes. The success led to the children holding an additional bake sale the next day.
