Glasgow Rangers could yet be unexpected visitors to next week’s NatWest International Island Games in Gibraltar.
The 54-time champions of Scotland have been drawn against Gibraltan side St Joseph’s in the first qualifying round of the new season’s Europa League.
The first leg is meant to take place in Gibraltar next week at the Victoria Stadium.
St Joseph’s beat nine-man Prishtina 2-0 on Tuesday to secure a 3-1 aggregate win. However, should local rivals Europa also get through, the visit of Rangers would be brought forward from its planned date next Thursday to Tuesday.
That is because currently the Victoria Stadium is Gibraltar’s only suitable venue for European matches. The Stadium is only due to stage the start and finish of the Games’ half-marathon on Friday.
Europa hosted Sant Julia as the Courier went to press on Thursday evening, with the Andorran side leading 3-2 from the first leg. The winners will host Polish side Legia Warszawa in the first leg of the next round.
St Joseph’s John Paul Hendrick told Daily Record Sport: ’We have offered 960 tickets [to Rangers].
’The Island Games start this weekend and will be going on for a week so we had to consider that.
’The police will have a hard time but there’s not much more we can do - we have to play the game.’
