A broad range of ideas was suggested for the potential redevelopment of the former RAF camp at Jurby.

Th e Department of Infrastructure said it was encouraged by the level of interest shown in the 24.96-acre site.

Submissions are being assessed by the public estates and housing division and a report will be presented to the department’s political members for further consideration.

The development opportunity was advertised during the summer and the DoI said it was keen to hear a variety of proposals.

Developers and members of the public responded with wide-ranging suggestions including new homes, business premises, sports, leisure and recreational facilities, craft and artisan workshops and new premises for start-up businesses.

There was a high-level of engagement among residents, with submissions arising from two community meetings held in July.

Julie Edge MHK, department member with responsibility for the public estates and housing division, said: ’The department wanted to test the water to see if there was any interest in developing the Jurby camp.

’We also asked residents and businesses for their views about possible future uses for the site. The response has been excellent and we will take this feedback into account as we consider our next steps.’

She added: ’We believe this site offers great scope for the local community and island businesses.

’The amount of land available will potentially allow a scheme to be progressed that comprises many different elements. While any proposals would require planning approval, the development of the RAF camp could support the economy, provide jobs and act a catalyst for the further regeneration of the north of the island.’
