There are ’very serious’ concerns about the safety of the main road in Port St Mary.

The authority has asked the Department of Infrastructure to investigate it further.

Commissioner Michelle Haywood raised the subject after residents talked about feeling their houses vibrate.

She said: ’They are very concerned. Residents are reporting they felt their houses are vibrating more when the buses are going by.’

Referring to her own home, she said: ’We felt it before the land slip in 2010. When the voids beneath the road were filled in, it did not vibrate.

’I actually think this is very serious. I raised it with the harbour keeper as well. Loss of access would stop it being a working harbour in one fell swoop. I think we need to take it really seriously.’

Commissioners’ clerk Alastair Hamilton said the department has made two visits.

Rob Hirst asked if they had seen reports.

Alec Merchant said he was ’concerned’ because of the economic situation, and remarked the government is ’getting private companies to do the work’, such as the structural work to stabilise the bank for a development.

’And roll over on planning,’ added Alan Grace.
