COMMERCIAL FEATURE: As mental health challenges continue to rise across all age groups, finding effective and accessible ways to support well-being has never been more crucial.
In this interview, mum-of-three Michelle Booth, founder of Isle of Man therapy provider Growing Minds, discusses how her initiative is making a meaningful impact on mental health for children, families, schools, and businesses across the island...
Hello Michelle, welcome to IOM Today. Can you start by telling us a bit about Growing Minds and why you decided to focus on NLP therapy?
Michelle: Thank you very much, Growing Minds stems from my passion for helping young people and families navigate today’s challenges. With a background in nursing and midwifery, I've worked closely with children and families, and I've seen firsthand how stress, anxiety, and behavioural issues can impact young lives. Becoming an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) therapist has allowed me to use powerful techniques to create lasting change, helping children, young adults, parents, and teachers develop coping strategies for happier, more fulfilling lives.
For those who may not be familiar with it, could you briefly explain what NLP is and how it applies to therapy?
Michelle: Certainly! Simply put, NLP explores how thoughts and beliefs shape behaviours and emotions. This therapeutic approach connects our brain, language, and actions to replace unhelpful thoughts and behaviours with beneficial ones. NLP addresses issues like phobias, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and communication. For children, it provides accessible tools to manage emotions and reduce anxiety.
What specific challenges do children, teens, and families face today that NLP therapy addresses?
Michelle: Today’s children and teens face unique pressures—academic stress, social challenges, and digital-age anxieties. Many struggle with self-esteem, bullying, anxiety, and sleep issues, while families feel increasingly stressed. NLP offers practical techniques to reframe thinking, manage stress, and build resilience. It helps children handle fears and supports parents in improving communication with their kids.
You also offer services for teachers and schools. How does that work?
Michelle: We work with schools to equip teachers with NLP tools for the classroom. Teachers often face students' behavioural issues, anxiety, and emotional needs. Our workshops provide techniques for managing classroom stress, promoting a positive environment, and boosting student confidence. Empowered teachers can support students' mental well-being, positively impacting the overall classroom dynamic.
I have also heard that NLP can be highly beneficial in corporate settings, is this true?
Michelle: In corporate settings, NLP enhances communication, leadership, and team dynamics. By applying NLP, employees gain self-awareness, improve interpersonal skills, and manage stress and conflict effectively. This is especially beneficial in sales, negotiations, and customer service, where rapport-building and adapting communication are key. For leaders, NLP fosters a supportive, motivating environment, boosting employee satisfaction, productivity, and workplace culture.
What has the response been so far, and where do you see Growing Minds going in the future?
Michelle: The response has been very positive! Parents, educators, and businesses increasingly recognise the importance of mental health and seek practical support. With mental health services stretched, families and schools appreciate our tailored, empathetic approach. I aim to expand our reach, partnering with more schools and organisations to build resilience and emotional awareness for the next generation and their guides.
As this is a private service, cost is going to matter to clients. Could you walk me through your fee structure for private NLP sessions or any specific programs you offer?
Michelle: The cost of private services can be a major barrier for many seeking support - I understand, having been in that position myself. My priority is to offer effective, accessible help. While I have a standard fee structure, I’m committed to finding affordable solutions with parents and organisations. I believe everyone deserves access to quality mental health care.
That all sounds incredibly exciting and a service that is fulfilling a very real need in the community. If people want to get hold of you, what’s the best way for them to reach out?
Michelle: It is wonderful to be able to help people, whether it be in a 1-2-1 therapeutic setting, school or corporate workshop, I love what I do. There are many ways to get in touch with me but here’s some of the easiest:
