An increase of 5.73% in gate fees at the island’s Energy from Waste plant and Wright’s Pit North could fall at the feet of the public.
Both domestic and commercial users of the facility will be affected by the change, which comes into force from April 1.
The hike will also have an impact on local authorities across the island, who have responsibility for waste management and will have to decide whether to pass on that charge to ratepayers.
The increase is calculated from a series of indices, including Manx RPI inflation, despite the government using the lower CPI index, labour, and materials.
It’s levied annually by plant operator Suez Isle of Man (formerly Sita) on the Department of Infrastructure to cover operating costs and will result in charges of £91.93 per tonne of domestic waste and £183.04 of commercial waste.
Disposal
Dedicated loads of wood will still be offered a ’preferential’ tipping price of £35, and tyres will remain £100 per tonne for disposal.
Isle of Man Newspapers sought to contact the island’s local authorities to ask what, if any, impact the plans will have on rate payers.
Pete Burgess, clerk at Garff Commissioners, said: ’Garff Commissioners are aware of the energy from waste gate fee increase.
’This will be taken into account during the rate setting process.’
And clerk of the local authorities of Arbory and Rushen Phil Gawne added that the cost to those Commissioners would be ’three or four pence in the pound.’
He said he believed local authorities would have to consider whether to pass that on to ratepayers.
