A popular band, based in the south of the island, is to hold a benefit concert next week.
The Rushen Silver band is to hold a concert at St Columba’s Church, Castletown Road, Port Erin on Monday, January 27, from 8pm.
The concert is to be held in aid of the Southern Befrienders, a local community charity that provides companionship to older people in the south of the island.
Chris Weldon, the chairman of Rushen Silver Band, said that the concert will also give the band a chance to unveil a new set of music to the group’s fans, after spending the past couple of months playing Christmas carols and wintery-themed songs.
’Following on from a successful festive period for the band, all the members are looking forward to be playing some non-Christmas music for a change,’ said Chris.
’We will be offering a new programme of music that will hopefully have something for everyone.’
The concert is the first for the silver band during 2020, and follows on from a very busy and momentous year spent celebrating a milestone anniversary.
The Rushen Silver Band played a series of events throughout 2019 to mark its 70th anniversary, including a unique concert held on Fleshwick Beach, the site of the first performance under the name Rushen Silver Band in 1949.
Prior to that, the group was known as the Surby Silver band.
’From celebrating the 70th anniversary last year of our name change to Rushen Silver Band, we also have already numerous different projects on the go that will be taking place through the year,’ said Chris
’A significant sum of money was raised at a similar concert in 2019, held for the homeless charity ’Graih’, and we’re hoping to do likewise again this year.
’The Band are also delighted to be able to support another local charity in their valuable work.
Rushen Silver Band are also selling copies of its third CD, a collection of classic Christmas music, available on the night, or from members of the band.
Monday night’s concert is free to enter with donations to the Southern Befrienders.
