Samaritans is inviting everyone to run, jog or walk 26.2 miles in their own time and at their own pace next month to help the charity save lives and continue its vital work.

Samarathon is suitable for all ages, abilities and fitness levels and challenges people to complete the length of a marathon during July, while raising much-needed funds for Samaritans.

Island branch director Gary Leeming said: ’Samarathon is designed to be an achievable challenge for as many people as possible.

’We’re not asking you to complete 26.2 miles in one go, it can be a leisurely stroll with friends or family or a short jog, at a safe distance of course.’

He added: ’Exercise can work wonders for our mental health, as can social interaction with our family and friends.’

The charity is there day and night for anyone who is struggling to cope or needs someone to listen.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic the Samaritans has continued to offer a vital lifeline for those who need it.

Mr Leeming said: ’The Covid-19 crisis has presented Samaritans with unprecedented challenges. At a time of such high anxieties and uncertainty, it is more important than ever for our lifeline to be available around the clock. Our branch has remained open throughout this crisis and will continue beyond, all thanks to our dedicated volunteers.

’There are, of course, running costs involved and these must be covered for us to remain open. Signing up to Samarathon will directly help our local branch in achieving this.’
