A railway loco that featured in the closing credits of Hi-de-Hi has been entertaining some happy campers at the Groudle Glen Railway.
Following a major restoration, the steam-outline diesel engine, which has been re-named Maltby, was officially launched at a ceremony at Lhen Coan station.
Built by Baguley in 1947, she once worked at the Butlin’s holiday camp in Clacton, Essex, and featured in clips used for the closing credits of TV comedy sitcom Hi-de-Hi. Her last season at Clacton was in 1976.
The locomotive has been based at Groudle since 2007 but had been out of service for a number of years. During 2017 she underwent extensive refurbishment work at the North Bay Railway in Scarborough.
She has been re-named Maltby in honour of Richard Maltby Broadbent, the Victorian entrepreneur who developed Groudle Glen and opened the railway in 1896.
