The friends aged 10 and 11 completed their ’Sea to Sky Challenge’ at the weekend and managed to out-do their target amount of collecting £300 for Mannin Sepsis, Rebecca House and The Children’s Centre.
Together the team was Theo Head, Reece Phillips, Alden Owen, Alex Maher,Ollie Crookall, Jacob Harding, Jackson Bowers, Ryan Colquitt, Kieran Douglas and Guy McGuinness - whose dad joined in with them on his birthday.
Starting on the beach, they walked up past the Laxey Wheel and through Agneash before getting to the mines. From there they made their final ascent to the top of the mountain.
Theo, 11, who led the initiative, said: ’Agneash hill was one of the hardest bits because it was quite steep and long. We went along the main trail which was quite rocky and walked into the marsh.
’The most challenging part was the last bit up the mountain. We had already done about three-and-a-quarter miles of walking by then.
’As soon as we got to the top there was no hesitation to sit down and have lunch.
’My mum said: "You haven’t reached to top yet!". We finished our sandwiches and sprinted up.’
The boys then made their way back down where they treated themselves to a cooling swim, an ice-cream and pizza each. ’When we were coming down and were going past the sailing club we had that feeling of "we’d done it",’ said Theo.
He said that he was inspired by his teacher, Alan MacNair, who finished the Three Peaks Challenge last year. Participants climb Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in England and Ben Nevis in Scotland within 24 hours.
The charity Mannin Sepsis was chosen because Theo’s grandad died from the illness.
One reason they did the walk was to say good bye to each other before they go to different high schools.
