A service of remembrance was held on Monday to mark the 59th anniversary of the Winter Hill air disaster.

The commemorative ceremony was organised by the Rotary Club of Douglas to honour the 35 Manx residents who lost their lives in the crash on the slopes of Winter Hill, near Horwich in Lancashire in 1958.

It was held at the memorial stone in Cooill y Ree Park, in St John’s and Reverend Leslie Guthrie conducted the service.

Wreaths were laid by Onchan resident John Brown and Howard Callow from Douglas Rotary Club. John’s grandfather Norman and Howard’s father Thomas were killed in the accident.

Thanks was given to the residents of Horwich - and in particular members of the Rotary Club of Horwich - for their help in rescuing survivors and in providing comfort and support.
