The 62nd anniversary of the Winter Hill plane crash was marked with a commemorative service.

Some 35 Manx residents lost their lives in the crash on the slopes of Winter Hill, near Horwich in Lancashire, on February 27, 1958. The flight from the island to Manchester had 42 people and board.

The Rotary Club of Douglas arranged a service of remembrance at Cooil y Ree Park, St John’s, on Thursday.

As well as remembering those who lost their lives and family and friends affected by the crash, thanks was given to the residents of Horwich - and in particular members of the Rotary Club of Horwich - who did so much to help in the rescue of survivors and provide comfort and support.

The service started with music from John Struthers and Guy Pickard of Ellan Vannin Pipe Band, followed by a spoken introduction from David North.

The names of the 35 people who died were then read out by Anthony Pugh and David Mylchreest.

Wreaths were laid at the foot of a plaque, which marked the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.

Jean Guthrie gave a reading titled ’Remembering’ before Olga Gray recited her own poem ’In the shadow of Slieau Whallian’.

Everyone who attended the service was invited to Green’s Cafe for refreshments.

The Winter Hill disaster remains the worst aviation accident to occur in connection to the island.
