Either if they are starved of the chance to get out and gig in a pub somewhere, or relishing the novel chance to perform music to a wide audience, many local musicians have turned to hosting online shows during the period of social restrictions.
With the aid of nothing more than a smartphone camera, songwriters such as Steven Nash and Terry George have hosted regular online shows through their Facebook pages.
’It was strange at first,’ said Steven.
’In some ways it was harder than gigging in front of an audience. But I’ve got used to it as I’ve done a few live streamed gigs now.
’I think it may well help me interacting with an audience when I can get back to gigging in pubs.
’It’s also given me something to focus on mentally.’
Mae Challis decided to play requests by people and, to date, has played songs as diverse as Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, the Foo Fighters song ’My Hero’ and Sinead O’Connor’s ’Nothing Compares 2 U’.
Kizzie Puzzar and Ash Ashenafi put together a regular fortnightly series of shows, under the title of ’Gigs From the Bedroom’, hosting the likes of Rhiannon Jade, Aaron Harwood and Chess Warren and many more, which regularly attract many viewers and listeners.
Guitarist John Barker has been playing, what he has dubbed, his ’Overdale Sessions, performing a range of blues, roots and folk songs, including Tom Waits, Neil Young, John Martyn and Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello and REM through to traditional tunes on the mandolin.
Also Paul Reynolds, the singer with Shoh Slaynt, has teamed up with percussionist Annie Pearce to perform a series of popular songs.
