Two sisters braved the clippers to show their support towards a sibling who is currently going through breast cancer treatment.

Rowena Kelly of Douglas and Rachel Green of Ramsey now feel the winter breeze more keenly after their long locks were shaved off in an effort to reassure their eldest sister, Maxine, that ’it’s just hair!’ and it will grow back.

The pair decided to raise funds towards the charity Manx Breast Cancer Support Group.

Joined by their husbands, who had their legs waxed, they raised a total of £5,365 towards the charity.

Following her head shave, Rowena said: ’It’s feels very cold!

’People have been fairly shocked at what we were planning and have actually done considering we have always had long and very thick hair.’

Her sister Maxine, known by friends and family as Max, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer at Easter this year.

’She’s had two surgeries and is half way through chemotherapy which will be followed up by radiotherapy in the New Year,’ Rowena said.

’The prospect of losing your hair is a frightening thought and we did our best to reassure her "it’s only hair" it will come back.

’We then suggested we shave our heads too, just so she wouldn’t be alone and it kind of developed from there.

’Max had joined the MBCSG Facebook page and we had been checking out their website and all the wonderful things they were doing to raise money for the computed tomography (CT) scanner appeal.

’We thought we’d like to support this too.’

The fundraiser, which also saw a raffle and auction take place, was held at Vagabonds Rugby Club in Douglas.

The sisters were stunned by people’s generosity, Rowena said, and thanked everyone for their support and donations.
