Roads around the island will have their surfaces improved over the next six weeks to withstand wet conditions.

Micro asphalt will be used to reduce the likelihood of skidding in wet weather by improving the texture of the road surface, which helps disperse water from vehicle tyres.

The Department of Infrastructure has said the material will seal cracks and can be applied in varying thicknesses to ’improve ride quality by levelling ruts and depressions’.

This highway improvement programme, which is being carried out by Colas IoM Ltd, will begin tomorrow (Tuesday).

Roads being treated are: A5 Douglas Road in Ballasalla (Orrisdale to Clagh Vane); Cronk Honna in Port Erin (Tennis Cottage to Ballachurry Road); Ballachurry Road in Port Erin (Ballakillowey roundabout to Ballachurry Road); Ballafesson Road in Port Erin (Bay View Road to Ballachurry Road); Staarvey Road in St John’s (Cronk-y-Voddy to Switchback); Castletown Bypass (S100 start/finish straight) and Maynrys, Castletown (excluding roundabout).

Speed restriction signs and traffic controls will be placed on these roads during the works.

Road markings will be removed in advance of the surface treatment.

Some roads may need to be closed during working hours while the surfacing works is carried out.

Leaflets have been produced to explain the process to affected residents and address frequently asked questions.
