Major changes are proposed to give Onchan Park greater community appeal - and could mean the end of the road for stock car racing there.

A report following a public consultation on the future of the park’s facilities recommends that the Nivison stock car stadium is converted into a community sports and recreation facility.

Other recommendations include revamping the crazy golf course with new obstacles, buying four new battery-powered kiddie-cars and covering the Park Lawn with a year-round soft-play surface .

The report commissioned by Onchan District Commissioners notes: ’Onchan Park has seen better years causing certain areas to look worn and old.

’There have been a number of refurbishment developments to the park in the past few years. However, Commissioners are considering a larger scale development.’

The report notes that stock car racing is a unique attraction to Onchan Park which has been running there for nearly 50 years and does benefit tourism.

But its author says on balance the motorsport facility should make way for a community sports centre with both tracks removed and the banked track levelled.

There would be two pitches, one with an all-weather surface to accommodate a wide variety of sports and activities.

The report suggests renovation of the stadium would address current safety issues and turn Onchan Park into a hub for sports and recreation.

Should the decision be made to redevelop the Nivison Stadium, work could begin in 2018 following the end of the current lease held by Onchan Raceway.

There is considerable support for both the pitch and putt and the crazy golf attractions, the report notes. But it says the crazy golf course should undergo a significant renovation involving the total replacement of the current ’dated and worn’ obstacles.

It recommends larger, more imaginative and more challenging obstacles based on a theme of a trip around the island and representing different Manx landmarks.

Local businesses would be invited to sponsor an obstacle. The report suggests the revamp would cost £30,000 at most and investment would be recouped within two years.

It recommends the pitch and putt course is reduced in size by three holes, with the space created used for bouncy castles and bungee trampolines or as a picnic area.

It also suggests replacing the Park Lawn with a soft play surface with board game designs or a track design.
