Some bands find that, once they play on the Isle of Man, they can’t help but come back time and time again.
And no matter how many times they do play here, they always go down a storm.
That definitely seems to be the case with Space.
The popular group, who achieved major world-wide success in the indie heyday of the 1990s Britpop scene, are to play an intimate gig at the Promenade Suite at the Villa Marina on Saturday, March 18.
This would be the band’s third time playing on the island, and frontman Tommy Scott’s fourth.
The band played a raucous, show-stopping gig at last year’s Deep South Festival, and Tommy returned late on in November for an intimate solo concert at St Ninian’s Church.
Those with longer memories may remember the band playing at the Venue, the long-lost concert hall on the seafront in the early 2000s.
They scored successive hit singles in the 90s with songs such as ’Avenging Angels’, ’Female Of The Species’ and ’Me And You Versus The World’, and albums, ’Spiders’ and ’Tin Planet’ spent many weeks in the charts.
Tommy said he and the band have enjoyed each time they have visited the island, and hopes that this time around will be just as special.
’I love the island, it is such a great place,’ he said. ’Each time we’ve been over we’ve been looked after really well, and made to feel so welcome.
’I played a great solo night at a church the last time I was over, and the festival before that was a really good gig. The crowd were amazing, and really appreciative. Everyone always seems up for a laugh here.
I’m not too fussy about the ferry journey over though.’
The band are gearing up to release their new album, ’Give Me Your Future’, recorded by legendary producer Steve Levine, and Tommy promised to include a host of new songs in the set.
’We’ve just finished recording our new album. It sounds amazing, and we’re looking forward to getting it released.
’We play about four or five songs from it in our set, and they are going down really well with the crowds so far.
’I wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t writing new material and putting our own new songs out. We do play a lot of the old hits, though, because lots of people still want to hear them.’
Tickets for the concert are on sale from the Villa Gaiety box office, priced £18.
This will be the first gig in a series of monthly nights at the Promenade Suite, with more major artists to be announced soon.
