A specialist support unit from the UK is to dispose of a ’suspicious package’ identified early this morning (Wednesday) at the Post Office headquarters.

Police were called to the Isle of Man Post Sorting Office at Spring Valley Industrial Estate, Douglas, at 8.45am after post office staff members found a suspicious looking package.

It was decided that the sorting office and nearby buildings would be evacuated while the package was evaluated.

The building will remain closed until a specialist support unit from the UK arrives to safely dispose of the item.

Nearby premises are no longer evacuated with members of the public being allowed to return to them.

A police spokesman said: ’We would like to reassure the public that the appropriate procedures for incidents of this nature are being followed and the safety of the employees of the Isle of Man Post Sorting Office and the general public remains our priority.’
