The Friends of Castletown railway station held a combined Victory in Europe and Victory in Japan day celebration on Saturday.

Aside from marking the 75th anniversary of VJ day, the event helped raise money for the continuing works at the station.

At 11am Jimmy Cottier, the chairman of the Castletown branch of the Royal British Legion, re-enacted the last post and held a one minute’s silence for Manx soldiers that died in the war.

During the day there was entertainment from the Swingin’ the Isle dance group who performed their own routines to 1940s songs and ran introductory workshops on lindy hop dancing.

Carol Quine, chairman of the Friends of Casteltown Railway Station, said: ’It was a fabulous day and the lovely weather we had really helped bring people together.

’Each train was packed with people which was really nice to see.’

The Southern Belles singing group performed a selection of 1940s songs by Vera Lynn and Glenn Miller.

The Women’s Institute had a stall selling different varieties of jams and preserves taking inspiration from the ’make do and mend’’ campaign that ran throughout the war.

A total of £271 was raised by the group during the course of the day to go towards the works currently going on at the station.
