Manx Utilities has applied to temporarily close the steps that link South Quay with Douglas Head Road to undertake essential repairs to a drainage pipe.

The ’Gas Works’ steps, as they are also known, will be closed for a period of four weeks from July 5.

During a recent CCTV survey of the 225mm surface water pipe, a number of defects were identified including two localised collapses which require urgent remediation and backfilling of voids created by the defects located beneath the steps.

A Manx Utilities spokesperson said: ’For safety of pedestrians it has been necessary to close access to the steps while excavations are carried out. Once the remedial work has been completed Manx Utilities’ contractor, Environmental Techniques, will refurbish the pipe using a specialist lining technique.

’During the lining installation three-way traffic lights will be in place for one day on the lifting bridge roundabout to accommodate the large vehicles and plant required for this phase of the works.

’Manx Utilities apologises for any disruption caused during these essential works.’
