It may be a few months away, but Ramsey Commissioners are already thinking about holding a street party in May to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), which marked the end of the Second World War.

Events will take place throughout Europe over the weekend of May 8 to 10, as communities remember, reflect and pay tribute to the millions who played a vital part in achieving peace.

Here in the island, the Cabinet Office is working with veteran, cadet and serving personnel groups to put on a special event and has asked if local authorities would be interested in making plans for street or village hall parties, themed parties, events or celebrations.

Grants towards costs may be available, but applications must be made by January 10, 2020.

Ex-serviceman and Ramsey board member Alby Oldham proposed they hold a function at the Courthouse. All agreed, with Julia Wedgwood suggesting a street party. ’People do like dressing up for something like this’, she said.

Mr Oldham added the news that the Ramsey branch of the Royal British Legion succeeded in collecting £19,160 during this year’s Poppy Appeal.
