Students took to the streets again where they called for more action to ’safeguard the planet’ for their generation and those to come.
Around 60 students and members of the Climate Change Coalition stood in the blustery conditions while demanding that carbon neutrality should be achieved by 2035 and to end plans to extract gas or hydrocarbons.
The eighth strike by Isle of Man Student Climate Network was held outside the Legislative Buildings on Buck’s Road, Douglas, on Friday.
’We still feel that not enough action is being taken to address this immediate crisis,’ said Archibald Elliott, co-founder of the Isle of Man Student Climate Network.
’Currently 2050 only gives us a 50% chance of limiting warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, which again still carries very severe implications.
’We feel very strongly about taking climate action immediately and becoming carbon neutral by 2035 in order to safeguard the planet not just for our generation but for those yet to come.
’Furthermore, we appreciate the current actions being taken in light of Professor Curran’s Report, although we reiterate that still more needs to happen.’
In January, Tynwald voted unanimously to favour of the government’s action plan drawn up following an independent report by expert Professor James Curran on how the island could achieve zero net emissions by 2050.
The action plan makes 10 commitments, including 75% renewable energy by 2035.
The strike caught the attention of Environment Minister Geoffrey Boot MHK and Garff MHK Daphne Caine who spoke with the students.
Archibald said: ’The Environment Minister reiterated that government is taking enough action, something that we disagree on, though we welcome his call for urgent action.
’We are disappointed that the government still seeks to extract gas after declaring a "Climate Emergency", which contradicts the whole essence of their declaration.
’We liken it to selling drugs to fund the police, who are cracking down on drug crime. In our view, it makes no sense why we should extract more gas in order to become green.’
