Braddan skatepark and Hot Rocks climbing wall played host to the Isle of Man Skateboarding Summer Slam.
Hot Rocks climbing wall, in the Middle River industrial estate in Douglas, was the location for a girls-only skate session hosted by the ISB (Isle of Man Skateboarding) with help from two skate coaches from MCR Projekt Manchester, Kath Shanks and Kizzy Yuill.
Over three hours, Kath and Kizzy taught 60 girls of all abilities skate skills ranging from the basics to more advanced moves.
Skating started again the next day at Braddan skatepark for a one-hour beginners’ session, run by qualified coaches including Kath and Kizzy.
Both skateboards and BMX bikes were welcomed to the afternoon session.
The main event attracted about 400 people, including 100 participants comprising skaters of various ages and abilities. Skaters and riders both had park and bowl competitions as well as a highest ollie (jump) challenge for the skateboarders.
All competitions offered prizes for the winners including skate equipment, T-shirts and gift vouchers.
It was not all skating at the park however, live music was provided by Low End Theory DJs and the ISB held a barbecue for the spectators.
Event organiser Kristian Edwards said: ’Because of the success of these two events, ISB skateboarding will be considering coaching sessions in the future, so watch this space.’
The next ISM event will be ’Night of the Living Shred’ at Braddan skatepark for Halloween.
The event will be run under the floodlights.
ISB thanked Year of our Island, Braddan Commissioners and sponsors for their support.
