Summerhill Glen has been resupplied with trout following a pollution problem in its river last year which saw more than 140 fish killed.

Fisheries officers have restocked the glen with male and female brown trout from lower stretches of the stream.

In September 2020, a number of fish and invertebrates were found dead after what was thought to be a ’pollution incident’ at Summerhill Glen.

Manx Wildlife Trust explained its education and biodiversity officer made the discovery whilst on a trip with a school group for an outdoor education session at the time.

According to MWT, the children had just started stream dipping when they came across several dead fish.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture staff ’responded quickly’ and sent out a team to conduct water tests, and began ’investigating the pollutant and the cause.’

In a statement on social media on behalf of Fisheries agency, it said: ’This will hopefully allow the fish to repopulate the region where a detergent based pollutant killed most of the fish and invertebrates within the upper stream.

’Thankfully, invertebrates have returned to the area which are a food source for the new arrivals.

’Pollutants like detergents, oils and other chemicals like pesticides and concrete washings are deadly to aquatic life.’

It also warned the public to be mindful.

’Please keep vigilant and understand that all surface water drains will end up in a natural aquatic environment.’
