A rather unusual animal has been spotted roaming the island intent on making others happy.
Jilly McGrath has been disguised as a Tyrannosaurus Rex during the lockdown, visiting people at a two-metre distance to provide some entertainment whilst also raising awareness for an animal charity.
She came-up with the idea after a friend’s mother’s passing as a way of cheering-up her friend and her children.
The T-Rex has been spotted in numerous locations where people have asked her to pay a visit outside, including Anagh Coar, Pulrose, Saddlestone, Port St Mary, Ballasalla, Port Erin and many more.
Jilly said that she’s glad that the response has been so positive: ’It’s been absolutely fantastic. I know that some people can’t leave their homes over lockdown, or feel isolated and I know how that can feel. Especially if you’re on your own completely or alone with children.
’I just go round and start singing or do crazy stuff like dancing with music. I also get cards to give to people if it’s a special occasion.’
Jilly is raising funds for an animal charity, Animal Aid Rescue, which helps rescue animals and those who may not be able to afford pet food or vet bills. So far, she’s raised over her £1,000 target with £1,055.
Jilly said, ’It’s just great to brighten everyone’s day, I can’t believe the impact that it’s had on the island, and it’s been uplifting for me as well.
’I’ve appeared for birthdays, anniversaries and just because people want to see me say: "RWAAAAAAR! I LOVE YOU!" I just really enjoy getting the suit on and saying that for people for them to shout it back at me. I’ve even been doing my shopping in the suit, asking them before I go in if it’s OK.
’I’ve been along the promenade for a walk as the dinosaur and I enjoy making people happy and saying: "RWAAAAAAR means that we all love each other in lockdown!" That’s what it is - no one’s forgotten about over lockdown. There was a 90-year-old lady’s birthday in Castletown and she loved it and was dancing along.’
Residents might spot the T-Rex out-and-about this week once the weather’s improved, as she says she roams around ’shaking her dino booty’ wherever she’s needed.
Jilly is still accepting bookings for visits - you can contact her via the Animals in Distress website: www.aidrescueiom.org or email [email protected].
