Cruse Bereavement Care has issued a reminder to people who have been bereaved to take care of themselves at Christmas.
The charity has issued advice to support people through what it says can be a ’really daunting time for those who have lost a loved one’.
Service co-ordinator Amanda Cafearo said: ’Approaching Christmas for the first time without a loved one can lead to loneliness and upset. It can be equally as difficult if someone was bereaved long ago.’
She said that planning what you will do over the Christmas period will help, explaining: ’Decide what feels right for you and what you feel comfortable with.
’You may want to spend some time remembering your loved one as this can help by bringing them in to your celebrations.
’You could visit the grave or revisit memories through photographs or other memorabilia.
’You may just want Christmas to pass by and others may choose to carry on with the usual routine especially if there are children in the household.’
Amanda said that looking after oneself and keeping routine is important for those who are grieving.
’Maintaining a normal routine of eating and sleeping are simple things that can make a difference,’ she said.
emotions
’Of course, it is a time when emotions can take over and if this happens, allow yourself flexibility and time to yourself and let those around you know how you are feeling.
’As well as needing time alone, you may feel like talking so having family or friends around can help or talk to an organisation such as Cruse.
