The brother of singing sensation Susan Boyle has dreamed a dream of his own - with a plan to base a new online TV channel in the island.
Edinburgh-based producer Gerry Boyle has ambitions to go global with his Internet World Television venture.
After touting the business around the UK, he has announced he is to base his IWT studios here at the Mountain View Innovation Centre just outside Ramsey.
He promises to bring big names to the island but also for the channel to be a platform for new talent.
’The sky is the limit. Content will be king. It’s about getting the audience,’ he said.
’Nobody is doing TV as it used to be. It’s going to be TV for the world.’
The free-to-watch online channel will be event-driven, with live shows harking back to TV’s golden era of the 1970s and 80s.
First of these productions, ’I Can’t Believe It’s Not Live Aid’, is billed as a ’very special re-creation of the iconic rock event of the Eighties, showcasing many new rock acts, as well as re-producing, live on stage, many of the unforgettable performances of that day.’ It is due to be staged as early as July 14 this year and tickets are already on sale.
This is to be followed over five days in August by ’Summertime Special - For Your Pleasure’, a ’Las Vegas-style two-hour show, featuring dancers, singers and comedians with very special guest stars, from both the UK as well as America’.
Susan Boyle hit the big time after appearing as a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009.
I Dreamed a Dream became the fastest selling debut album of all time and her albums have topped the charts in both the UK and the States.
Her brother Gerry, who collaborated with Sir David Frost as producer on TV’s Through the Keyhole, said he has invested a couple of million pounds in his venture, including £500,000 from his famous sister.
He said he is now talking to investors in America and London and looking at a £10m investment. ’Everyone seems up for it,’ he said.
Mountain View Innovation Centre incorporates the old Island Film Studios site at Lezayre.
Owner, AFD Software managing director David Dorricott, said the centre provides ’ideal facilities for the exciting vision of IWT’.
He said: ’We look forward to providing the maximum amount of support and encouragement to Gerry and the IWT team to bring this vision to reality.
’It will be an amazing benefit to the Isle of Man - especially the north and would undoubtedly synergise other exciting ideas in TV and media businesses.’
IWT’s aim is for revenue to come from ticket sales for the live shows as well as phone-in and text competitions.
Although the channel will be free-to-watch, viewers could pay for prime content in association with Gerry’s other venture United Audience.
Gerry said he has been developing the concept of a new online TV channel for some time.
He explained he had met and discussed location requirements with a number of UK local authorities but ’everywhere we went we could not find anybody to work with us’.
Last month, he met with government officials and the team at the Mountain View centre.
Gerry said: ’We have now been convinced by both the government and companies in the island that IWT should be situated here.
’The Mountain View Centre at Ramsey will, chiefly, be promoted to viewers in the UK and the USA, as IWT Studios.
’From there, we will produce regular and annual shows and events which we are confident will become extremely popular, as the emphasis is on entertainment.’
Gerry added: ’IWT will work closely with its LA-based associates to bring many top-names to the Isle of Man.
’This will serve to enhance the location as a must-visit site, for many people in the US, Canada, China etc.
’Overall, we are delighted as producers to, finally, be on the point of introducing our content to the world.’
He said he hoped the live show will raise significant revenue for many great causes including Food Banks across Britain.
A spokesman for the Department for Enterprise said: ’Gerry Boyle of Internet World Television has been in touch and we are awaiting a business plan so we can review the details of his ambitions.
’It’s looking like an exciting year for the department as we are working with a number of media companies with an interest in the Isle of Man.’
