A Freedom of Information request has revealed the most dangerous areas of the island to travel on the roads.
The FoI showed that there were 706 crashes on Manx roads between July 2019 and March 2020, of which three were fatal.
However this was in part due to the way that crashes in Douglas are recorded by ward rather than for the capital as a whole.
What is clear from the mapping of the figures is that the majority of accidents which occured outside of Douglas happened on the Mountain Road, the A1 Peel to Douglas Road and in Onchan village.
Most accidents recorded (519) are what the police described as ’damage only’ incidents.
This means that noone involved suffered anything beyond minor injuries and that damage was limited to the vehicles themselves.
TT course
The majority of the ’slight’ damage crashes, of which there were 128, happened on the TT course or in the south of the island, with a surprisingly high number shown in the area of Castletown.
There were 38 crashes which the police recorded as ’serious’.
These were mostly concentrated on the Mountain Road with other hotspots including Onchan village and Douglas’ wards.
There were other serious crashes shown around the island, however they were isolated incidents rather than clusters on particular roads.
The three fatal crashes recorded between July 2019 and March 2020 all occurred in the south of the island in Santon and Rushen.
A fatal crash in Santon in October last year resulted in the tragic death of 19-year-old Katie Robley.
Two men were killed within three days in Rushen.
Joshua Keith Thornton, 23, from West Yorkshire, died at the scene of the accident involving three motorbikes on the Sloc Road on June 6 and John Nally, 58, Ireland died on the Ballakillowey Road in Colby on June 9.
The other 18 crashes on Manx roads were those involving animals, most of which occurred in rural areas.
In its response to the FoI, the Isle of Man Constabulary said that it was unable to release other information requested such as gender and age of the driver, the speed limit on the road the crash happened on.
This was for a number of reasons including the fact that some drivers don’t stop at the scene so their identities are unknown.
