As the sun sets on another fantastic year of motorbike racing in the island, a fearless few will this weekend take on the Microgaming Soapbox Derby.
The course runs down Upper Church Street, past Bar George and The Courthouse, before a near 90 degree turn into Barrack Street with the finish line by the Outback.
On the way, competitors will have to negotiate tight turns, steep slopes and three jumps. The race is due to be run from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday.
Kate Moughtin, senior CSR manager at Microgaming, said: ’The fun factor is going to be off the scale, and our PlayItForward volunteers, alongside the marshals and course personnel, will be on hand to keep everything on track and to make sure the race can be enjoyed by participants and spectators alike.’
Prizes will be awarded on the day for the quickest run, fastest recorded speed, biggest jump and best crash, as well as awards for outstanding kart design and best dressed competitor.
In previous years, entries have included a Snaefell Mountain Railway tram (pictured above), a double decker bus, Postman Pat and Brum from the children’s TV show.
All proceeds from the race will go to the Hyperbaric Chamber as organisers seek to top the £4,000 raised from the 2016 race.
Elliott Moore, event organiser, said: ’There are three major jumps on the course that promise thrills (and spills) for adrenaline seeking drivers and spectators to enjoy, and not forgetting the usual chaos and crazy antics from the quirkiest and most creative karts as they hurtle to victory.’
Mrs Moughtin added a warning for all other competitors: ’Team Microgaming will be turning up with their fastest, hopefully most stable kart yet.’
