A hedgehog that fell seven feet onto concrete and lived has been named Grace by the Manx Hedgehog Conservation Society.
The society was contacted by Onchan Commissioners asking for help with the hedgehog after she fell from a wall.
The commissioners had found Grace outside their office and fearing her dead had placed her in a box before ringing the MHCS.
When the charity’s founder, Sandy Huyton, arrived on th scene, she realised Grace had actually survived.
While showing no obvious signs of injuries, Grace wasn’t able to curl herself into a ball, which is never a good sign for a hedgehog.
Sandy said: ’We gave her a warm heat pad and a padded bed for comfort and some peace. Lying in the same position but breathing we kept her bed warm and offered cat food and water.’
After three days, Grace was beginning to show signs of recovery as she moved and began to eat her food.
By the next day, she had ’opened her bowels’ and by the fifth day, Grace had recovered enough of her strength to curl into a ball and is now on the mend.
Sandy told the Examiner that when Grace began to eat, she knew Grace would survive.
She added: ’Hedgehogs are very sensitive little creatures and if they’re upset or hurt, they just won’t eat.
’She must have been very sore after her fall but with lots of care, she’s getting better.’
Before Grace is released into the wild, Sandy will continue to monitor her recovery, including checking she can walk properly.
Sandy said part of the reason Grace survived is her weight.
At 718g, ’her weight was her cushion upon falling’.
It is currently breeding season for hedgehogs.
However Sandy doesn’t believe Grace has had hoglets this year.
