A modern reworking of an old Manx fairy tale has won a host of awards at various recent international film festivals.
The short film ’The Lost Wife’, produced by the island-based film production company Dark Avenue scooped two awards at the recent Phoenix Short Film Festival.
Awards were handed to Jeremy Theobold, a British actor who lives in the Isle of Man, who was named as best actor and also to harpist Mera Royle, who composed the soundtrack.
Jeremy is an actor with appearances in several Christopher Nolan films to his credit, including a starring role in the top director’s 1998 major picture debut ’Following’ and an appearance in Nolan’s major hit film ’Batman Begins’ in 2005.
’The Lost Wife’ is based on the tale of the fairy tale ’The Lost Wife of Ballaleece’, which tells the story of a man who tried to rescue his wife after she is abducted by the little people.
It transposes the story into the modern day and the story features Jeremy’s character who becomes withdrawn following the disappearance of his love and after he becomes the target of suspicion.
Mera Royle, the former BBC Radio Two Young Folk Musician of the Year, composed the music for the film and recorded it alongside violinist David Kilgallon.
The film also saw the Prague International Monthly Film Festival hand the award for best editing to Will Fletcher and the Dark Avenue team, led by filmmakers Patrick Crellin and Bethany White.
Dark Avenue is also seeing another of their films grab the attention of international film critics and judges in short film festivals across the world.
’An Endless Summer’, a film about the experiences of the Covid-19 lockdown on a young mother, is to be shown for the first time in public at the Socially Relevant film festival in New York, which takes place between March 15 and 21.
’An Endless Summer’ has already won awards in several festivals, including ’Best Covid-19 film’, at the Toronto International Film Festival
There will be the chance to buy tickets to watch the screening of the film online and to be able to vote.
Early tickets are priced between $5 for one screening and $30 for a full festival pass, available from filmfreeway.com/SRFF21
