The latest play produced by a local community theatre group will really give them the chance to let their hair down.
This year, the small, but dedicated Marown Players group will present their very own pantomime version of the classic fairy tale, Rapunzel.
The long-haired heroine will try to escape being locked in a tower, and escape the clutches of the evil witch, Gothel, by using her only asset, her 18 foot-long hair.
The audience will follow her through her journey as she meets a hairdresser with a penchant for dad jokes, a pair of bumbling bad guys who are trying to be good, a very odd pair of fairy godfathers and ultimately the prince, who will show her the life she has been missing, imprisoned high up in her tower.
Alice Willoughby will play the follically-blessed lead role, and Ben Crookall will play the handsome Prince.
The two Andrews, Lodge and Willoughby, will reprise their double act, which has seen them play Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and a pair of pirates in previous productions, supplying some terrific comedy moments in the process.
The play is produced by Alison Lodge and directed by Sonya Quayle, who said that they have both had their work cut out for themselves trying to recreate Rapunzel’s tower and very long hair.
’Its Rapunzel, but not as you’d know it,’ said Alison. ’That is what you should begin to expect from the Marown pantomime. Nothing is ever as it seems.
’We are using a lot of imagination, creative lighting and a lot of hair to make our Rapunzel and her tower come to life.
’We did ask her to grow it especially, but it was a big ask, but Lynne, one of our backstage team, is knitting a plait of hair, which will be about 18 foot by the time it is finished.
’We are making all our own costumes, the stage scenery and the props, and altogether we will have about 30 people on the stage, and they are backed up by a great crew and a wonderful team,’ she said.
’Rapunzel’ will be performed at Marown School from Wednesday, February 20, from 6.30pm, and Thursday 21 to Saturday 23, from 7.30pm.
Tickets are £7.50, available by contacting Alison on 470366, or online form marownplayers.im
