Gorse branches, hurling and hockey sticks, make-shift clubs, skateboard ends, broomsticks and even a sweeping brush were wielded with intent at the annual Cammag match upon Boxing Day.

The traditional battle of north versus south attracted over 70 combatants from all over the island, and saw them do battle over three halves for the right to claim the Cammag cup.

In the end, a dominant North saw off a spirited South, and eventually ran away with the tie, winning 6-1.

This was despite heroics from the south goal keeper, Ryan Davies, who literally threw himself into every challenge, and ended up limping from the field with bashes to his ankle, rib and wrist.

He was awarded a very-deserved man-of-the-match award.

Match official Chris Caley said the game was played in good spirit, and that the North were deserving victors.

’The North took and early lead and, despite the South equalising, went on to win comfortably,’ said Chris.

’Overall, it was a really good game this year.

’The game was played in the right spirit. There were unfortunately a couple of injuries, but it was a good afternoon all round, I think.’
